MARK TWAIN

Mark Twain jako u mnoha jiných známých spisovatelů je také jenom pseudonymem. Pravým jménem se nazývá Samuel Langhorne Clemens. Jedná se o jednoho z nejvýznamnějších amerických humoristů a spisovatelů všech dob.
Pocházel z velice početné rodiny. Ovšem jak už to v tamních dobách plné nemocí a nevyléčitelných chorob bývá, dožily se dospělosti pouhé čtyři děti a jedním byl i Mark Twain. Dětství prožil v městečku Hannibal ve státě Missouri.
Z těchto končin čerpal svou inspiraci pro svou nejúspěšnější knihu Dobrodružství Toma Sawyera. Nejstarší bratr Orion se po otcově smrti jako správný muž ujal své rodiny a převzal vůdčí zodpovědnost za všechny pod střechou.
Koupil tamní noviny Hannibal Journal, do kterých záhy začal přispívat i Samuel. Je typickým příkladem toho, že škola z nikoho spisovatele neudělá. Neměl dokončené základní vzdělání a vše se doučil jako samouk v průběhu života.
Splnil si i svůj sen a v roce 1858 získává kormidelnickou licenci a na tři roky se stává hlavním mašinfírou parníku plavící se po řece Mississippi

We wish to learn all the curious, outlandish ways of all the different countries, so that we can “show off” and astonish people when we get home. We wish to excite the envy of our untraveled friends with our strange foreign fashions which we can't shake off. The gentle reader will never, never know what a consummate ass he can become until he goes abroad. I speak now, of course, in the supposition that the gentle reader has not been abroad, and therefore is not already a consummate ass.

Grief can take care of itself, but to get the full value of joy, you must have somebody to divide it with.
